Football Rules and Regulations

Football rules and regulations can be complex. To prevent any physical assaults and injuries, the games need to proceed in a disciplined manner. There are specific official Football rules so as to ensure one team does not exploit the other. The game has its own set of regulations.

Discussing the Football rules and regulations, the field is 120 yards long and 53 ½ yards wide and is divided up every 5 yards by a yard line. There are goal posts at the back of each football end zone. As football is a timed sport, the team with the max points at the end of the time period, wins the game. The game is generally divided into 4 periods or quarters. There is an interval or half time between the second and third quarter. To keep the game going at a good pace, there is a limited time set between plays.

As per the official Football rules, each team should have 11 players on the field at a time. They are allowed to substitute players between the games with no restrictions. Each team has to start a play on their side of the ball. The defensive players can take any position they want. Although there are some definite defensive positions that have become common with time, there are no specific Football rules defining defensive positions or roles.

The team which possesses the football is on the offense and tries to advance the football on the field. The defense has to stop the offense from advancing the football and scoring points.

There are many Football rules and regulations regarding the penalties that are enforced during a game. Depending on whether the penalty is against the offense or the defense, most penalties result in a loss or gain of yardage. The severity of the penalty decides the number of yards, which can vary from 5 or 10 yards to 15 yards. The team that did not commit the penalty has the right to refuse the penalty.
